Apply for Potential Presentation of Your Work with PDX Playwrights

Once again, we at PDXPlaywrights brim with excitement about presenting the “Festival Within the Festival” at Portland’s Fertile Ground Festival of New Works. We invite you to participate. Our participation within the festival dates, including tech and rehearsal, are April 7 through April 13, 2025. This is inside the full festival, running April 4 through April 19. Collaborating with PDXP as a co-producer offers an economical way to share your work with an appreciative audience. Please carefully read guidelines below for more information, and respond no later than December 22.

For casting information, please check this our website periodically.

Please note: Our “Epic Shorts” project focusing on short works operates separately, and details will be posted soon. Questions about this co-prouction opportunity —our regular festival participation— may be directed to producer@pdxplaywrights.org, and is in full swing!

NOTE: When you download the fillable PDF form, move it to your desktop and rename your copy to include your last name in the file name so that once you save the completed form with your name in the title it is distinct. Save a copy for yourself, and email the completed form along with your script to producer[at]pdxplaywrights.org as instructed. Thank you!

PDX Playwrights Application for Co-Producers

Due midnight Sunday, December 22, 2024 to producer@pdxplaywrights.org, with attached script(s). Use the subject line: PDXP FG APPLICATION 2025

IMPORTANT NOTE: READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE APPLICATION BEFORE YOU BEGIN!

This application is open to people residing in Oregon and Washington.

Welcome to the PDXP Co-producer Application. Our goal is to create a simple and streamlined process. If you have any questions about this application, please contact producer@pdxplaywrights.org.

OVERVIEW

As part of Portland’s citywide Fertile Ground Festival, PDX Playwrights will be debuting new works by local emerging writers in cooperation with several co-producing teams. You must reside in Oregon or Washington to apply. The productions will be presented April 10-13 at Chapel Theatre in Milwaukie, 4107 SE Harrison St.

We will be selecting works by diverse voices in a variety of modes. The emphasis is cooperation and collaboration. In that spirit, to support and learn from the other teams, if you are among the playwrights selected, you will be required to attend an in-person meeting tentatively scheduled 7 pm Tuesday, January 28, at a Portland location to be announced. You (or a representative from your show) will also need to attend weekly sessions on Zoom starting in early March (preliminarily slated for Mondays at 7 pm). Your co-production team will be asked to provide a volunteer or two to help with at least two other PDXP co-produced performances, which they can attend for free!

If your submission is selected, the PDXP registration fee for your co-production is $250 for one performance, or $500 for two. (Producers with shorter work sharing a performance slot divide the costs.) All PDXP Fertile Ground tickets are $15, with approximately 80 seats for sale; after Fertile Ground-related service fees are deducted, remaining box office proceeds go to you.

For all submissions, once again, past participation with PDXP is a plus but not required.

WHAT WE WILL DO

PDXP will support you with coaching and support all along the way. We’ll help you create a budget, a production timeline, and an effective plan for media and outreach. We will serve as the lead contact for all shows under the PDXP umbrella for Fertile Ground and the Portland Area Theatre Alliance. Our fee includes the cost of the theater, up to two hours of rehearsal time in the space, tech, ticketing, and what otherwise would be an independent registration fee with Fertile Ground. PDXP is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to serving local playwrights.

SHOW REQUIREMENTS

  • Less than 75 minutes. Longer scripts must be abridged. (An hour is ideal.)
  • Casting, rehearsing, and directing for your show must be arranged by you, the co-producer.
  • EITHER full-length, OR a collection of shorts by one or more writer(s).
    • NOTE: This application is separate from the PDXP Epic Shorts project which has different requirements.
  • EITHER a staged reading OR off-book and more fully produced.
    • NOTE: A staged reading or script-in-hand format is recommended, as our emphasis at this stage of development (and with the limited number of performances) is on the script.
  • Low-tech with minimal sound and light cues.
  • Minimalistic set and props.
  • A working partnership with the other teams.

SUBMITTING YOUR SCRIPT(S)

Due 11:59 pm Sunday, December 22, 2024, to producer@pdxplaywrights.org  attached to the Co-Producers Application. Your script(s) should be in a standard stage play format, and error-free, with the title, writer(s), cast requirements, setting, time, concise and clear stage directions, and dialogue. You must include page numbers on your script as well as a run-time and page count on your application.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All scripts must comply with PDXP’s content guidelines. Any scripts with gratuitous violence, or that target any individual or group will not be considered.

(Use the form to apply, below is an overview of the questions on the form.)
